Progress over Perfection: From Glory to Glory

Writer: Belinda AsamoahBelinda Asamoah

2 Corinthians 3:18

But we all, with unveiled face, beholding as in a mirror the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from glory to glory, just as by the Spirit of the Lord.

In our desire to please The Lord as we walk with Him we may at times get overwhelmed by our shortcomings and failures. Yes, He is undoubtedly a Holy God who delights in righteousness. However, He is a Holy God who makes it clear to us that He is aware of our frame or in other words our weaknesses. (Psalm 103:4) This in itself shows that God is not after spotless perfection or interested in our ability to maintain a “streak of righteousness”. This is not an excuse to live in sin however, but a reminder and encouragement that when we do slip up it is not the end of the world.

If God is not after perfection, what exactly does He seek then?

Simply, progression. The ongoing journey of growing into maturity as we walk with Christ. Our ability to cling on to Jesus even when we feel unworthy of His mercy and grace. 2 Corinthians 3:18 highlights the idea of continual progression perfectly. It highlights that whiles we behold the glory of God by keeping our gaze fixed on Him and Him alone, we undergo an internal reconstruction which eventually manifests physically in the form of purified thoughts, motives, actions and speech. In other words, our transformation from glory to glory is correlated to how consistently we are able to seek the face of Jesus (through prayer, fasting, worship, bible studies, etc.) and rely on Him to live righteous lives, instead of relying on our own strength and willpower which usually leads to severe disappointments.

As we behold Jesus we are transformed from the inside out. As we spend time with Him, He begins to rub off on us. As we meditate on His word daily, our minds are being renewed and equipped to overcome sin. As we remain vulnerable and transparent with Him, He softens our hearts and helps us to love what He loves, and detest what He detests.

A genuine relationship with Jesus is the key to our transformation from glory to glory.

Proverbs 4:18 (AMP)

But the path of the righteous is like the light of dawn, that shines brighter and brighter until [it reaches its full strength and glory in] the perfect day.
