I believe that one of the most beautiful things God created was friendship. Friends are treasures. He created us to share and experience life with one another. Friendships are so important, but this is one area of our lives that gets the least spiritual covering. When it comes to relationships, we mostly pray more about our romantic relationship than for our friendships. We must make it a point to pray more about our friendships and be very discerning about which friends to pick. The devil loves to plant his seeds where there is a strong bond. He understands how important friendships are so he seeks to destroy them in every way he can. He knows how easier it is for some people to confide in friends than their relatives, he also knows how people would seek advice from friends first before they even decide to ask other people. Without spiritual covering over our friendships, he will be able to manipulate our friends and make sure that we receive wrong advice.
The Bible is also truly clear about the type of people we should not make friends with. Proverbs 22:24-25 says, “Do not make friends with a hot-tempered person, do not associate with one easily angered, or you may learn their ways and get yourself ensnared.” It is not our responsibility to try and change such people by being friends with them. We do not have the power to change anyone, only God does. It is extremely dangerous to keep people the Bible strongly warns against as friends. Below are a few examples of the type of people to avoid as friends.
Proverbs 20:19 – A Gossip
Proverbs 24:21-22 – A rebellious person
Proverbs 29: 3- An immoral person
Proverbs 13:20 – A foolish person
Sometimes, we also use the excuse that how will we spread the gospel to other people if we do not make friends with them. The truth is, we do not need to be friends with them to preach to them. Our lifestyle can also serve to draw people to Christ. The danger in making friends with people the Bible warns us against is that we can be influenced to become like them. You can have a relationship with them without being friends with them.
