Let God use what you have

Writer: Belinda AsamoahBelinda Asamoah

This is a very common story in the Bible when Jesus fed the crowd with only five loaves of bread and two fishes. Before Jesus fed the crowd, He tested Philip (one of His disciples) by asking Philip where they could get bread to buy (John 6:5). Philip’s response was full of doubt. Philip said, “It would take more than half a year’s wages to buy enough bread”. The other disciple, Andrew, spoke about a little boy having food, but he stressed how little the food was. He could have just said that there was a little boy with food but he saw the need to stress how little the food was. He said, “Here is a boy with five small barely loaves and two small fish, but how far will they go among so many?” Andrew’s response to Jesus was to let Jesus know how impossible it was for Jesus to even attempt to feed the crowd. Andrew’s response shows how some of us respond when it comes to allowing Jesus to use us or what we have. We believe our gifts or talents are just too small for God to use. We downplay God’s ability to use what we have. You might have the gift of drawing, singing, dancing, or being able to notice very intricate details in all situations. Give it all to God and allow Him to work through you and use what you have. He is able to multiply the smallest things to produce a lot. If Jesus could use the five small loaves of bread and the two small fishes to feed a whole crowd, He can use the small gift you have. Sometimes, we make excuses that when we have a larger gift, then we would start serving God. But the truth of the matter is that if you do not allow God to use the little you have now, then you would not allow God to use the bigger gift you may have (LUKE 16:10 "Whoever can be trusted with very little can also be trusted with much, and whoever is dishonest with very little will also be dishonest with much). Just like the little boy with the five small loaves of bread and two fishes, allow God to use what you have. ACT:

  • Make a list of the things you do with ease. Eg: drawing, painting, speaking, journaling

  • Make a list of things that you receive a lot of compliments on.

  • Talk to God about the gifts you have, ask Him to use them.
